Eve Myles is Gwen Cooper. She’s a feisty Welsh policewoman and new mum who is hiding out in rural Wales with her husband Rhys (Kai Owen).
But Gwen’s passion for Torchwood is difficult to extinguish, and it’s not long before she faces the challenge of fighting evil forces – and trying to be a good mum to baby Anwen.
And Eve Myles, who is also mum to 20-month-old Matilda, can identify with the difficult decisions Gwen has to make.
I think Rhys thinks their marriage is bliss. But she’s so bored, living in the middle of nowhere.
It’s OK but she’s Gwen Cooper; she’s just connected to this organisation and it’s her drug, her adrenalin, her heartbeat, her breath.
It’s Torchwood, it’s what she does.
They’ve completely been in hiding and are trying their best to be the best parents they can and that means keeping baby Anwen away from any sort of danger.
And, of course, Gwen is on constant high alert. They are living in this chocolate box kind of cottage but there isn’t a cupboard that isn’t full of explosives, machetes, knives, even double-barrel shotguns!
Gwen is like the lioness with a cub. She is very much Gwen Cooper, armed to the teeth, but this time with a baby bottle. It’s a mega powerful image.
The actress had to uproot her own family – Matilda, partner Bradley Freegard and dog Honey – to a new home high up in the Hollywood Hills at the start of the year.
But, after taking some maternity leave after the birth of her first child, she says she was raring to play Gwen again – and can sympathise with her character’s tensions now that she is a mum too.
“I think it’s odd how it’s mirrored my life so much.”
