‘Torchwood: Miracle Day’ DVD release

Starting today, the DVD and Blu-ray UK release for Torchwood: Miracle Day goes on sale. The DVD features all ten episodes from the series as well as some extras, delivered in a nicely packaged four-disc set.

Torchwood – Miracle Day (Series 4) [DVD]

Reviews of the DVD set are somewhat mixed, citing weak (but decent) extras and the slow pacing of the series.

From SFX:

Where Miracle Day really comes unstuck is in its pacing. There are some wonderful jaw-hits-the-floor moments and truly visceral images, but it lacks the steady dripfeed of revelations that can make episodic TV so compelling. Those sins would be easy to forgive if they were building towards the mother of all finales, but the “is that it?” denouement makes the hours invested feel like a waste. Time for another evolution.

From Cult Box:

Elsewhere on the four-disc set, you’ll find two behind-the-scenes Torchwood Declassified features, one of which is exclusively devoted to the many effects sequences, as well as episode introductions to all ten episodes from Davies and John Barrowman.

Of the two, Davies shows the greater restraint, managing to tease without need of hyperbole. Barrowman, however, is pure showman, telling us that we’re gonna love to hate Oswald Danes, and generally hyping up the story in the manner of a man who considers himself to be on the fastest rollercoaster ride in the world.

No word yet on the US release, but those from Down Under can pick it up 1 December. For those equipped with a Blu-ray player, you can purchase the region free version.

Torchwood should have ended after Children of Earth – which was a well-written, dramatic miniseries that I actually got involved in. Children of Earth actually felt like an ending – Gwen was left to start her family with Rhys, and Jack was freed from earth when he had nothing (Ianto) to make him stay. It wouldn’t have been a happy ending, but it would have been an ending and as far as I’m concerned, it was the end of Torchwood.

Miracle Day was just bad, apart from one or two scenes for the entire series. But in my opinion, they killed the show when they killed Ianto – it doesn’t feel like Torchwood without him. I didn’t care about the new characters, Jack was barely in the show, and there was too little Wales. It just felt like a bad American action show that happened to have Jack and Gwen. Rhys was also sorely underused, though I do love the relationship between Rhys and Gwen – nice to see her loving, normal home life vs her Torchwood life.

I’ve not met a person who liked Miracle Day. It was too different and lacking all the charm that made me fall in love with Torchwood 1-3 in the first place.
